Potted Houseplants in Sapporo
by Violet Marsh
Under the flat, diffused light of an overcast Sapporo midday, a cluster of potted houseplants sits on a weathered wooden windowsill inside a traditional machiya townhouse. The green leaves of a fiddle-leaf fig and trailing pothos press against the cold, single-pane glass, their surfaces catching the muted gray sky reflected in the window. Outside, the blurred background reveals the distinctive dark timber framing and white plaster walls typical of Hokkaido’s historic architecture, at the base of the scene in its specific regional context. One droplet of condensation rests on the lower right corner of the pane, distorting the view of the mossy stone step just beyond the threshold.
