Hand-Forged Skewers by Afyonkarahisar Fireplace
by Kane Kinney
Two dark, hand-forged iron skewers rest horizontally across the rough-hewn stone hearth of a traditional fireplace near Afyonkarahisar. The metal surfaces show uneven hammer marks and a matte black oxidation that absorbs the soft, overcast light filtering through the room. Behind the skewers, embers glow faintly within the dark recess of the firebox, casting a warm, reddish hue against the surrounding masonry. The floor tiles are smooth and cool, reflecting the muted tones of the iron and the dim light in elongated, distorted shapes. Late summer light enters from a high window, illuminating dust particles floating above the hearth. The skewers end in simple, rounded tips, their weight balanced against the aged stone. A thin line of soot marks the edge of the hearth where the metal touches the ground.
