Indigo twilight blankets a public square in Hangzhou where a South African gumboot dance festival unfolds. Dancers viewed from behind wear heavy black rubber boots, their feet stomping the wet, reflective pavement. Late autumn air hangs heavy as dramatic, layered clouds press down from the darkening sky. A distant town glow paints the horizon in soft orange and purple hues, against the cool blue tones of the evening. The rubber boots shine under the ambient light, showing water droplets and scuff marks on their surfaces. Spectators stand in the background, their silhouettes merging with the fading daylight. The dancers' rhythmic movements kick up small splashes, freezing moments of motion on the slick ground. A wet rubber sole presses firmly against the stone, leaving a dark, wet imprint.
