Glowing Butter Lamps in Buenos Aires Temple

by Marcia Jenkins

Small brass butter lamps form a perfect circle along the base of a prayer wheel corridor. The warm amber flame of each lamp flickers against the dim, blue-tinted evening light filtering through the space. Condensation beads along the surface of a nearby glass pane, catching the soft glow and reflecting tiny points of orange fire. The brass surfaces show signs of handling, with a polished sheen that contrasts with the matte finish of the surrounding walls. Shadows stretch long and soft across the floor, created by the low angle of the evening light mixing with the artificial neon reflections. The arrangement feels deliberate and still, with the flames dancing gently in the quiet air. one drop of melted wax rests on the rim of the nearest lamp, solidifying into a translucent amber teardrop against the dark metal.
