Glaciers on Stratovolcano Flanks Aerial View

by Eva Marshall

High over the dense grid of greenhouses near Cerro Santa Lucia in Santiago, the diagonal sweep of a stratovolcano dominates the horizon. Patches of white glacier ice cling stubbornly to the dark, rugged flanks, contrasting sharply with the deep earth tones of the rock. A brief sun shower breaks the clear dry mountain light, turning the upper slopes into a shimmering, wet surface that reflects the pale sky. Below, the orderly geometric lines of the agricultural fields stretch toward the mountain base, dwarfed by the sheer scale of the peak. Raindrops blur the foreground slightly, softening the crisp edges of the greenhouse roofs while the distant summit remains defined against the grey clouds. The diagonal angle of the slope creates a visual tension that pulls the eye upward toward the icy crown.
