Girl Feeding Baby Goats Near Asyut Hay Bales

Bright midsummer sun flattens the dry air beside stacked hay bales near Asyut. A young girl stands low to the ground, her hands offering feed to three small goats clustered at her feet. Wind whips loose strands of hair across her face and ruffles the rough texture of the straw bales stacked behind her. The goats press their woolly heads into her palms, ears twitching against the dry mountain light. Dust lifts in thin swirls around their hooves, kicked up by the sudden movement of the wind. The girl wears simple, worn clothing suited for farm work. Behind her, the stacked hay forms a textured wall of golden-brown fibers that catch the harsh sunlight. One shadow stretches short and sharp beneath the goats' bellies.
