Giant Mushroom Sacks in Yaounde Bazaar

Soft overcast light fills the narrow Yaounde bazaar aisle, illuminating a towering wall of burlap sacks filled with red paprika, brown cumin, and deep indigo spices. The rough woven texture of the sacks contrasts with the smooth, pale caps of enormous mushrooms sprouting from the dusty floor. These impossible fungi, as wide as umbrellas, crowd the space between the market goods, their stems thick and sturdy. A few ordinary market items rest directly against the giant mushroom caps, at the base of the surreal growth in the daily rhythm of the wet season. The vibrant red spice powder spills slightly from a torn sack, settling on the damp earth near the base of the largest fungal cluster. A small puddle of water reflects the curved white surface of a nearby mushroom cap.
