Foggy Alleyway Crates at Twilight in Dashoguz

by Rebecca Bush

Rain-slicked cobblestones reflect the amber wash of streetlights and the white beams of distant vehicle headlights. Stacked wooden and plastic delivery crates line the narrow passage, their surfaces glistening with moisture. A low fog rests on the ground, softening the edges of the crates and swirling around the metal trash bins. Dry leaves and paper scraps skitter along the wet curb, caught in a gust of wind that funnels through the gap between the buildings. The sky above is a deep, heavy violet, signaling early summer twilight. Shadows stretch long across the damp pavement, while the rough texture of the brick walls contrasts with the smooth, reflective wetness of the street. One puddle near the base of the crates mirrors the flickering neon sign above.
