Vendors Exchange Goods Between Wooden Boats

Flat noon light reflects off the wet, dark wood of narrow canoes moored side-by-side beneath a corrugated metal canopy. Two vendors lean over gunwales, their hands passing bundles of fresh produce wrapped in translucent plastic. Raindrops create small, concentric ripples on the oil-slicked water surface between the hulls. The wooden planks of the boats show deep gray grain and water stains, against the bright, saturated greens of the vegetables. Overhead, the canopy casts a diffuse, shadowless glow that eliminates harsh contrasts while highlighting the texture of the rain on the vendors' raincoats. A red plastic crate sits precariously on the edge of the nearest boat, its surface glistening with moisture. The exchange happens close to the water line, where the wood meets the dark, rippling canal.
