Flowers Bursting From Pressing Newspaper Machinery
by Allen Hogan
Late afternoon light reflects off distant water, casting a cool, metallic glow across the interior of a Baltimore grain elevator. A massive industrial printing press dominates the frame, its rollers spinning with mechanical severity as sheets of newspaper feed through the mechanism. Above the machinery floor, a thick haze of metallic dust hangs suspended in the air. From deep cracks in the concrete foundation and seams of the metal casing, vibrant autumn flowers erupt in impossible profusion. Crimson chrysanthemums and golden mums burst through the gray steel and worn concrete, their petals sharp and distinct against the industrial grime. The juxtaposition of the roaring press and the sudden, organic violence of the blooms creates a scene where nature reclaims the machine with deliberate, visible force. at the edge is a single petal resting on a freshly printed news headline, untouched by the spinning gears.
