Flowers Grow From Concrete Grading Bench

by Mario Meyers

Pale dawn light slips across the dusty concrete floor of a Damascus fulfillment station, illuminating a long grading bench cluttered with sorting hardware. The metal surfaces gleam under the cool, still air of the dry season. From hairline cracks in the steel table and the tiled floor, vibrant wildflowers erupt in impossible clusters, their petals unfurling against the industrial gray. Rows of empty bins await export, reefer, and yard work that has not yet begun. Warm interior shadows pool beneath the sorting stations, against the delicate, impossible blooms pushing through the rigid infrastructure. One cluster of crimson petals rests on the edge of a metal divider, catching the first rays of morning.
