Amber Light Rolling Newspaper Press at Speed
by Angela Ray
Rich amber sunset light floods the scaffold platform near Salem, illuminating the industrial machinery as it churns through a continuous stream of newspaper sheets. The heavy rollers turn with mechanical precision, feeding fresh print into the drying mechanism. Fine dust particles hang suspended in the shafts of light, creating visible cones that drift slowly above the moving paper. Rainy season moisture rests on the metal surfaces, darkening the steel frames and catching the warm glow of the approaching dusk. Converging lines from the scaffolding rails and press components draw toward a vanishing point deep within the workshop. The paper sheets ripple slightly as they exit the rollers, their black ink still wet against the pale newsprint. One sheet catches the light on its edge, revealing the texture of the fibers.
