Floodlit Crossing Guard Post Under Blue Hour Fog
by Bette Peck
Late autumn twilight settles over a Damascus street corner where a crossing guard post stands rigid beneath the harsh glare of government floodlights. The concrete base of the structure anchors the view, its gray surface wet with recent rain. A thick layer of fog fills the lower third of the frame, rising to a perfectly straight, knife-sharp horizon line that cuts across the legs of the post. Above this impossible boundary, the air is clear, revealing the heavy metal signage and the yellow safety stripes of the barrier. The blue hour sky presses against the illuminated facade of a nearby government building. Water droplets rest on the metal edges of the sign, catching the artificial light. The sharp edge of the fog creates a distinct separation between the damp street and the open sky.
