Flooded Dead Trunks in Paraná Forest

by Rosemary Cardenas

Steady rain creates a sheet of ripples across the water that fills a flooded forest in Paraná. Hundreds of pale, dead tree trunks rise vertically from the gray surface, their bark stripped of leaves by late autumn. The soft overcast light flattens shadows, turning the standing timber into a rhythmic pattern of vertical lines against the dark, wet water. Moss rests on the lower sections of the trunks, adding patches of muted green to the otherwise monochromatic palette. The water stretches endlessly in every direction, reflecting the uniform sky above. A cluster of broken branches lies submerged near the foreground, their jagged edges cutting through the smooth, rain-disturbed surface.
