Floating Stupa Wrapped in Orange Cloth in beside a prayer wheel corridor in Tianjin

Floating Stupa Wrapped in Orange Cloth

by Toni Lam

Neon reflections wash the corridor walls in electric blues and purples while a massive Buddhist stupa, swathed in bright orange ceremonial cloth, hovers three feet above the stone floor. The sacred dome defies gravity, its base unattached to any visible support, casting a soft shadow that drifts slightly to the left. Beside the floating structure, a row of prayer wheels lines the wall, their wooden surfaces catching the harsh artificial glow. Deep winter shadows pool in the corners of the indoor space, against the warm orange fabric that ripples as if caught in an invisible wind. The stupa tilts gently, revealing the smooth texture of the cloth and the precise geometric lines of the base, while the neon light fractures across the floating form.
