Trivet at Flat Noon Light in in Fez, Morocco

Trivet at Flat Noon Light

by Judith Roy

Flat noon light flattens the depth of a narrow Fez alley, washing out color but sharpening the texture of lime-washed walls. A cluster of white ceramic mugs sits precariously on a low wooden counter, their glaze reflecting the harsh overhead brightness. Behind them, a metal trivet holds a stack of flatbread, steam long since vanished. The wall to the right is pierced by an iron hook, casting a sharp, geometric shadow that intersects with the dappled wicker shadow of a nearby mat. A cyclist in a faded blue djellaba pauses mid-turn, his bicycle handlebars visible in the lower frame, waiting for a porter to pass.
