Produce in Marseille at Midday Light
by Perry Strong
An overcast midday diffuses the light across the weathered stone facade of a Marseille corner shop, where a vendor stands behind a cluttered wooden counter. Woven baskets filled with red tomatoes sit near the edge, their bright color against the scratched metal sink rim and a lone shirt hanger hanging from a hook above. The composition layers the immediate produce against the deeper shadows of the shop interior, where tools like a hacksaw rest casually on a shelf, hinting at daily utility rather than display. A customer’s hand reaches in to select a fruit, showing the transient motion of commerce against the static, textured backdrop of local life.
