Flashlight Beam Cuts Fog Over Malaysian Thunderheads

by Joy Cooper

A sharp cone of white light pierces dense gray fog rising from a dark forest floor. The beam illuminates suspended water droplets that glow against the surrounding gloom. Above, a horizon of stacked, flat-topped thunderheads dominates the sky, their undersides heavy and dark gray under the soft, diffused glare of noon. Trees stand as dark, vertical silhouettes, their details lost in the mist. The wet leaf at the bottom edge reflects the pale glow where the light cone fades into shadows.
