Fish Auction Bidders Raising Paddles at Bradford Quay
by Bill Hill
Deep indigo twilight settles over the wet cobbles of a harbor quay near Bradford. In the foreground, the back of a bidder's dark wool coat frames the view, his arm extended holding a bright red numbered paddle high in the air. Several other figures cluster around a wooden table, their faces illuminated by the harsh, white glow of a portable work lamp that cuts through the evening mist. Distant town lights on the horizon blur into streaks of orange and yellow against the cooling sky. Wind whips loose strands of hair and flattens the brim of a flat cap, while rain-slicked fish scales on the table reflect the stark artificial light. The red paddle creates a sharp, electric contrast against the muted grays of the wet stone and the encroaching blue night. One droplet slides down the handle of a wooden gavel resting on the table.
