Freetown Vendor Hands Mangoes Across Water

by Kristina Whitfield

Tightly framed, the bright yellow-orange skin of ripe mangoes dominates the center, their textured rinds catching the flat, diffuse glow of an overcast midday. A vendor's weathered hands extend from the left, fingers curled around the fruit as they pass it across a narrow gap of dark, still water. Opposite, a customer's boat edge rises, its wood grain wet and dark. The heavy gray sky reflects as a sheet of muted silver on the water's surface, softening shadows and washing the scene in cool, even light. Small ripples distort the reflection of the fruit near the vendor's wrist. The exchange happens over inches of wet wood and dark liquid.
