First Light on Man
by Maggie Hood
First light after rain reveals a narrow alley in Fez where wet cobblestones reflect the pale sky and the terracotta roofs of the medina. A young man in a faded blue djellaba walks past a shopfront, his path illuminated by the soft, diffused glow filtering through the mist. The shop’s wooden door, painted a deep indigo, shows signs of wear with rust around the hinge screws catching the minimal light. Inside the open doorway, shelves hold rows of jade-green ceramic glaze jars, their glossy surfaces against the rough plaster walls. A bottle caddy rests on a low counter, holding empty glass tumblers that catch the ambient light.
