Fiji Breakwater Beacons Reflecting at Twilight in beside a water tower ladder in Fiji

Fiji Breakwater Beacons Reflecting at Twilight

by Samantha Hodges

Steel warning beacons stand in a rigid row along the concrete breakwater, their red and white stripes sharp against the darkening sky. The water below mirrors the fading light, sending streaks of silver and deep indigo up the vertical ladder of the adjacent water tower. Wind ripples the surface, distorting the reflections into jagged lines that contrast with the unyielding geometry of the structure. Cool season air is evident in the crisp clarity of the metal surfaces and the absence of lush, heavy foliage. The leading lines of the breakwater guide the gaze toward the horizon where the last light fades, showing the engineered force of the installation against the natural elements. One reflection on the wet concrete edge shows the precise angle of the nearest beacon.
