Farmer Planting Rice in Madagascar Paddy in between vineyard trellises in Madagascar

Farmer Planting Rice in Madagascar Paddy

by Landon Hampton

Tropical sunlight floods a narrow paddy channel squeezed between rows of vineyard trellises in Madagascar. A farmer stands knee-deep in muddy water, hands busy placing bright green rice seedlings into the soil. The soil is dark and wet, reflecting the sky in small ripples around the farmer's legs. Above, wooden trellis posts rise vertically, casting sharp shadows across the water's surface. Fine particles of chaff and dust hang in the air, catching the harsh mid-morning light and creating a visible haze that softens the distant background. The farmer wears simple, weathered clothing stained with mud. Beside the water channel, dry earth shows the turn of seasons with sparse, yellowing grass. One seedling tip dips into the water, its reflection breaking the surface tension.
