Erhu Player Moonlit Bridge Jazz Club Chiba
by Terry Wong
Soft overcast light falls through the early morning haze of a Chiba jazz club, illuminating drifting festival dust that hangs suspended in the air. An erhu player stands at the frame's edge, their hands moving the bow across the instrument's strings with focused precision. Above, a giant koi fish hangs from the ceiling like a living parade balloon, its scales shimmering with metallic blue and orange hues against the dim interior. The musician wears a heavy late autumn coat, the fabric textured and worn, while the polished wood of the bridge reflects the muted daylight. Behind the performer, the brick walls of the venue show signs of age, against the impossible scale of the floating fish. One beam of light catches the curve of the koi's tail, casting a faint, elongated shadow on the floorboards.
