Egyptian Player Fadeaway at Roadside Dawn
by Lisa Cross
Low morning light cuts through the horizon haze, illuminating a basketball player mid-jump in a faded jersey and loose shorts. The athlete extends an arm high, fingers splayed around an orange ball, body angled away from the rim in a classic fadeaway motion. Behind the player, a dusty roadside stop near El Mahalla El Kubra features weathered concrete barriers and scattered debris typical of the Egyptian turn of seasons. The sun hangs low, casting long, sharp shadows across the dry, cracked earth. Dust particles hang suspended in the air, catching the golden rays. The player's muscles tense against gravity, knees bent deep, eyes locked on an invisible target. One dust cloud rises from the player's landing spot, settling slowly on the gravel.
