Basketball Dunk at Roadside Stop Noon
by Dalton Moore
Flat noon light floods the gravel shoulder near Edmonton, washing out shadows beneath a basketball hoop mounted on a weathered metal pole. A player in a sleeveless jersey stretches fully upward, fingers gripping the rim as the backboard trembles slightly. Early summer dust swirls in the air, catching the soft overcast glow that diffuses across the scene. The asphalt road curves away to the left, marked by faded yellow lines. Concrete blocks support the base of the hoop, stained with rain and tire marks. The player's sneakers dig into the loose gravel, kicking up small clouds of dirt. A rusted chain-link fence runs parallel to the road, separating the court from a field of dry grass. The camera tilts sharply, angling the horizon and showing the height of the jump against the pale sky. The player's shadow stretches short and sharp directly beneath the feet, anchored to the dusty ground.
