Flat noon light flattens the textures of a dusty street corner in Luxor where a young boy balances a worn, cracked leather basketball on his knee. The ball’s creased panels are stiff with desert dust, against the smooth, faded blue of his school shorts. Behind him, a shopfront displays a row of colorful plastic laundry pins hooked over a metal rail, their bright reds and yellows popping against the beige stucco. A small, empty cake stand sits on a nearby ledge, holding nothing but the harsh shadow of the awning above.
