Eagle Owl Perched in Candlelit Taiyuan Ruin

by Keith Fitzgerald

Dim twilight falls through high, arched window openings into the stone nave of a Taiyuan cathedral ruin. An eagle owl rests on a weathered limestone ledge, its mottled brown and cream plumage blending with the rough masonry. Warm light from flickering candles in iron holders casts dancing shadows across the crumbling arches. Condensation beads on the surface of a nearby glass pane, blurring the cool blue of the evening sky visible beyond. The bird's golden eyes reflect the soft glow of interior lamps, creating a focal point of stillness against the textured decay of the ancient walls. One beam of fading daylight cuts across the floor, illuminating dust motes near the base of a broken column.
