Drying Rack in Kyoto

by Marcus Good

Golden hour light spills through a narrow Kyoto machiya alley, illuminating a weathered wooden lattice door slightly ajar. A woman in a practical indigo apron pauses to adjust a bamboo drying rack holding fresh white noodles, the steam rising faintly against the warm, dusty air. Beside her, a small stone lantern sits unlit on the damp concrete step, its surface reflecting the long, orange shadows cast by the overhanging eaves. A rattan chair rests empty near the threshold, its weave catching the low sun, while a clay window box overflowing with basil adds a splash of green to the earthy tones of the traditional architecture.
