Rain slicks the corrugated zinc roof of a shebeen in Soweto, reflecting the amber glow of a single overhead bulb that cuts through the dusk gloom. Under the eaves, a woman in a thick wool scarf wipes condensation from a metal bucket, her movements practiced and weary. Beside her, a small terrier shakes off water, droplets catching the light before hitting the wet concrete. A battered work stool sits near the doorway, holding a whisk and a spool of thread left out for quick repairs.
