Mist rests on the corrugated iron roof of a Soweto shack, diffusing the pale dawn light into a cool, blue-grey haze. In the narrow alleyway, a woman in a faded floral dress balances a stack of chipped enamel serving bowls, their red rims stark against the wet concrete. Beside her, a folding chair sits overturned, draped with a thick, woolen blanket that has absorbed the morning dampness. The ground is slick with runoff, reflecting the dull sky and the rough texture of the nearby brick wall. A simple sink is visible in the background, its drain clogged with grey soap residue, marking the spot where the night’s washing ended.
