Umbrella Dragon Blood Tree on Maldives Forest Floor
by Simone Dixon
A solitary dragon blood tree with its dense, umbrella-shaped canopy dominates the foreground, its thick, reddish-brown bark contrasting against the vibrant green ferns carpeting the forest floor. The setting is a lush Maldivian undergrowth where moisture hangs heavy in the air, visible as glistening droplets on broad leaves. Soft, overcast light filters evenly through the canopy, eliminating harsh shadows and revealing the intricate texture of the tree's fluted branches. In a deliberate impossibility, a stream of clear water defies gravity, flowing upward along the gentle slope of the earth to pool at the base of the tree's highest branches. The background layers of ferns and distant trunks recede into a soft haze under a perfectly clear, pale blue sky that sits incongruously above the wet season foliage. at the edge is the sharp, crystalline edge where the uphill stream meets the dry, weathered roots of the ancient tree.
