Display Case in Seoul

A narrow alley in Seoul’s Jongno district, flanked by high-rise apartment blocks casting long, sharp shadows on the wet asphalt. A shopkeeper in a thick wool coat stands beside a small, open-fronted stall, wiping down a glass display case with a cloth. On the counter, a wooden crate holds neatly stacked bundles of fresh garlic and ginger, their papery skins against the slick, rain-slicked pavement. A pair of worn brooms leans against the wall, bristles stiff with dried mud. The cold, flat light of winter noon reflects off the puddles, highlighting the texture of the shopkeeper’s rough hands and the condensation on the cold glass.
