Waiting Customers in Seoul
by Walter Gould
A narrow alley in Jongno-gu glistens with morning dew, the wet asphalt reflecting the pale, cool light of just-after-sunrise Seoul. On the left, a traditional hanok roof tiles slope steeply, against the bright red and white signage of a nearby bakery. A vendor adjusts a stack of metal canisters on a folding cart, the steam from a nearby kettle curling into the crisp air. Three customers in business attire stand waiting, their breath visible in the chill. The scene is busy but orderly, anchored by the rough texture of the stone wall and the smooth, reflective surfaces of the street. One hydrangea blooms in a cracked planter, its blue petals vivid against the gray concrete.
