Arranging Geraniums in Seoul

by Magnus Liu

First light after rain washes the narrow alley in Seoul in a cool, diffused gray, reflecting off the slick asphalt and the puddles pooling around the base of a traditional hanok’s tiled roof. A local vendor, bundled in a dark waterproof jacket, leans over a low wooden stall, arranging bright red potted geraniums that stand out against the wet stone. The water in the gutter nearby shows faint ripples from a recent drip, catching the pale sky. Beside the stall, a pair of worn work gloves rests on a damp plastic sheet, their texture rough against the smooth, rain-slicked surface.
