Oaxaca Day of the Dead Altar with Marigolds
by Sue Kelly
Golden marigold petals spill across a wooden altar table inside a prayer hall in Oaxaca, their bright orange hues against the muted earth tones of the room. Sugar skulls painted in white and pink sit nestled among the flowers, their glossy surfaces catching the soft afternoon light filtering through sheer curtains. The light falls in diagonal bands across the arrangement, illuminating the texture of dried petals and the smooth glaze of the ceramic skulls. A dark wooden frame in the foreground creates a window-like opening, focusing attention on the colorful offering. Dry season dust motes float in the sunbeams, settling on the rough fabric of a red tablecloth draped over the edge. The final beam of sunlight highlights the intricate sugar work on the forehead of a skull resting near the front edge.
