Dates at Noon Light

A narrow Istanbul courtyard bakes under the harsh, flat light of a winter noon, where the air remains still and cold. In the center, a weathered wooden table holds a bright ceramic bowl filled with dark, wrinkled dates, their deep brown skins against the pale stone pavement. Beside the fruit, a pair of metal calipers rests open on a scrap of newspaper, their steel jaws catching a sharp, cold glint from the sun. One red plastic clothespin clamps the paper to the table edge, adding a splash of saturated color against the muted grays and browns of the surrounding brick walls.
