Metalworker's Bench in Istanbul

Flat noon light bleaches the color from a narrow Istanbul backstreet, illuminating a cramped metalworker’s stall where a heavy workbench vise clamps a curved brass handle. Beside the vise, a chipped white porcelain jar holds a tangle of oxidized copper wire, its glaze cracked and stained with decades of use. One garlic press rests on the dusty wood, ignored, while a fresh citrus peel, bright orange against the gray grit, sits near a stack of thin tin boxes. In the background, the blurred shape of a kettle steams faintly on a low burner, its spout angled toward the street.
