Dancer Pirouette in Zakho Square Dawn Light
by Randi Burt
Stark fluorescent tubes overhead cast a cool, artificial glow across the wet cobblestones of a public square in Zakho. A ballet dancer spins in a mid-pirouette, their form rendered as a vertical smear of motion against the stillness. Raindrops hang suspended in the air, caught in the beam of the light, creating a brief sun shower effect that glistens on the pavement. The low angle emphasizes the height of the surrounding buildings, their facades textured with weathered stone and plaster. Shadows stretch long and sharp across the damp ground, against the bright, harsh illumination. The dancer's skirt flares into a soft, indistinct halo, while the wet stones reflect the overhead lights in fractured, shimmering streaks.
