Crochet at Midday Light in Havana
by Joanna Roach
Under the flat, diffused light of an overcast Havana midday, a narrow balcony of a crumbling pastel yellow colonial building serves as a makeshift drying rack. Several faded, brightly colored cotton towels hang limp against the white iron grille, their saturation muted by the gray sky. Below, on a weathered wooden railing, a child’s hand reaches up to adjust a crocheted doily draped over a rusted hook, the intricate white lace against the peeling paint and damp concrete. A quiet, domestic rhythm, where the textures of soft fabric meet the hard, eroded surfaces of the city, creating a tactile interplay of decay and care without any forced staging or artificial lighting.
