Crimson Bougainvillea on Wrought Iron Balcony in inside a restored train terminal in M'banza-Kongo

Crimson Bougainvillea on Wrought Iron Balcony

by Zara Velazquez

Heavy iron railings curve along a balcony ledge, draped in thick clusters of crimson bougainvillea bracts. The flowers spill over the dark metal bars, their papery texture catching the dim, copper-toned light filtering through a heavy overcast sky. Behind the blooms, the high vaulted ceiling of the restored train terminal rises into shadow, revealing exposed steel beams and weathered brickwork. The Dutch angle tilt of the view emphasizes the verticality of the structure and the chaotic spread of the vines. Dust motes hang suspended in the fading air near the glass panes, while the cool season air leaves the leaves slightly stiff. One bract rests against the rusted edge of a railing bolt.
