Crimson Bougainvillea on Wrought Iron Atrium Balcony

by Allison Garza

Heavy clusters of crimson bougainvillea spill over the curved black bars of a wrought-iron balcony, their papery bracts glowing against the muted gray of the vaulted atrium ceiling. The metalwork features intricate scroll patterns typical of late 19th-century Russian architecture, against the organic chaos of the vines. Soft, diffused light from an overcast sky fills the space, eliminating harsh shadows and revealing the wet sheen on the leaves and railings. Droplets of water rest on the green foliage, evidence of recent rain in the humid late spring air. The flowers cascade down in thick, disciplined waves, framing the empty space beneath them. One droplet rolls slowly down a curved iron scroll, catching the pale light before vanishing into the shadow below.
