Bougainvillea at First Light in in Hyderabad, India

Bougainvillea at First Light

by Lola Gilmore

A vibrant cluster of bougainvillea bracts clings to a rusted iron railing that runs along the edge of a wet concrete balcony in Hyderabad. The first light after rain illuminates the papery texture of the magenta flowers, causing water droplets to cling to their edges and reflect the gray sky. Behind the blooms, a faded blue door frame stands slightly ajar, revealing a glimpse of a dimly lit interior with peeling paint. One drop of water falls from the lowest petal, suspended in the cool morning air above the damp stone floor.
