First rays of sunrise spill over the brickwork of a tall Victorian chimney in Christchurch, illuminating dust motes that hang low in the still air. A chimney sweep, clad in soot-stained dark clothing, carefully descends the narrow shaft. The warm golden light catches the rough texture of the aged red bricks and the fine gray powder coating the sweep's shoulders. Late summer heat lingers, visible in the heavy, suspended particles of soot that drift near the ground. The figure moves slowly, their silhouette sharp against the brightening sky. Shadows stretch long across the cobblestones, showing the vertical depth of the chimney. One brick near the base shows a distinct chip where soot has worn away the mortar.
