Chimney Sweep on Rooftop in Dindigul Wet Season
by Judith Lang
Brick-red tiles stretch across the rooftop under the flat, white glare of noon, glistening with moisture from a passing tropical shower. A chimney sweep walks barefoot across the wet surface, balancing long wooden rods and bundled brushes against his shoulder. The sky above is a heavy, uniform gray, while distant river mist hangs low near the landing below. Water beads on the clay tiles, reflecting the harsh overhead light in sharp, scattered patches. The figure moves with deliberate slowness through the vast, empty space, surrounded by the damp texture of the roof and the distant, hazy outline of the riverbank. Raindrops streak down the smooth surface of the wooden handles, catching the light as they slide toward the worker's hand.
