Stonecutter Workspace in Luxor

by Jesus Berry

Under the harsh, flat noon glare of Luxor, a street-side stonecutter’s workspace reveals the gritty reality of local craftsmanship. A worn leather apron hangs from a wooden post, its pockets stuffed with metal chisels and a wooden ruler, evidence of hours spent shaping sandstone. Beside him, a low concrete bench holds a half-finished papyrus scroll and a discarded clay shard, while a faded blue plastic crate serves as a makeshift stool. The bright white sky bleaches the color from the surrounding mud-brick walls, leaving only the deep shadows under the awning to define the space.
