Cellist in Oklahoma Ruins at Dawn Light

by Rick Vega

Pale morning light spills across the floor of a roofless stone chamber in Oklahoma, illuminating a cellist seated on a rough-hewn block. The musician holds a dark wooden cello upright, bow resting against the strings, framed by the jagged arch of a remaining stone wall that creates a natural window. Dust motes hang suspended in the first rays of sunrise, catching the gold of the clear sky visible above the crumbling masonry. The stone surfaces show layers of weathering, with patches of lichen clinging to the gray surfaces. The cellist wears a heavy coat suitable for the turn of seasons, standing still against the backdrop of the abandoned structure. Shadows stretch long across the uneven ground, ending at the sharp edge of a fallen stone slab.
