Caracal Leaping Over Glacial Stream in Tampa Winter
by Jill Tapia
Raindrops scatter across the frame as a caracal launches mid-air, its tawny coat contrasting sharply against the pale, churning water below. The animal's ears stand erect and pointed, muscles tense in a moment of suspended motion. Droplets cling to its fur, catching the harsh tropical midday light that pierces through a gray winter sky. The stream flows rapidly, its surface broken by white foam and small rocks visible beneath the glacial water. Wet grass blades bend under the weight of rain near the water's edge, framing the lower portion of the leap. The cat's paws are tucked tight, claws retracted, while droplets hang in the air around its body, frozen in the bright, wet afternoon. One raindrop slides down a bent blade of grass in the immediate foreground.
