Sunlight cuts sharply through the narrow gap between two aging apartment blocks in Hakata, illuminating a tangle of laundry drying on a makeshift clothesline strung across the concrete balcony. A faded red towel hangs next to a pair of stiff winter work boots, their leather cracked and dusty from the dry cold. Below, on the rough concrete ledge, sits a chipped enamel camp mug, its blue paint peeling to reveal rusted steel underneath, abandoned next to a discarded plastic bottle.
