Arranging Porcelain in Fukuoka

Sunlight slants through the open front of a narrow Fukuoka machiya, illuminating a wooden counter where a shopkeeper arranges rows of glossy blue and white porcelain plates. The bright afternoon light catches the rim of a ceramic cup with a matte glaze, sitting beside a stack of clear glass tumblers waiting to be washed. Behind the counter, peeling turquoise paint on the original wooden framework reveals layers of history, against the clean, modern ceramics. A traditional embroidery hoop hangs loosely on a hook in the background, unused but present. A quiet moment of preparation, where the textures of aged wood and smooth glaze coexist under the harsh, clear light of a Japanese afternoon.
